Oh Captain, My Captain
Four or five years ago i was walking down Armitage after work, during the day the White Sox had lost to the Cubs for the second time that season. I was pissed, especially seeing all the asshole Cub fans in Lincoln Park. I had a Sox jersey on and my Sox hat. As i crossed Armitage & Halsted I looked up and saw Paul Konerko walking with his wife, pushing a baby stroller. She was the first to see me, and I was so shocked all i was capable of doing was smiling like an idiot, jaw to the ground. She noticed right away and turned to Paul and nudged him and whispered something i couldn’t hear, but from the looks of it it was probably along the lines of “Look at how happy(crazy) this guy is.” Now he didn’t say anything, but I’ll never forget the face he made when he turned and looked me in the eyes. His face said “Sorry we lost today. I’m the Captain and I let you down.” Then he looked down at his shoes and walked past me… I don’t know how I would react if PK went to finish his career on some other team, he’s my favorite player and the heart & soul of the White Sox. Thankfully after singing a 3 year deal today, that might not happen. Yet… You handsome son of a bitch, I hope you never die.

…and he never did. Thanks for the memories Paulie, I’ll miss watching you play so very much.
